The President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government is set to roll out mass electric vehicle (EV) transportation across North-East Nigeria, following the approval of nearly $100 million (N151.9 billion) in contracts for the supply of electric vehicles and the establishment of charging infrastructure in the region.
In a statement on Sunday, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga highlighted that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a contract for the supply of ten 17-seater electric buses last week. This is part of a broader initiative to promote green energy and reduce carbon emissions in the region.
A breakdown of the approved contracts revealed several key suppliers and project details. Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited was awarded a N2.9 billion contract to deliver ten electric buses within six months. Additionally, Messrs Mutual Commitment Company Limited will provide 4,000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion over the next nine months. Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development and Sinoma Investment International Limited will also supply 3,000 e-tricycles each, for N37.2 billion and N16.3 billion, respectively. These e-tricycles will have the capacity to carry nine passengers and a driver.
Furthermore, Messrs HNCEGC is set to provide 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs for a total of N16.3 billion. Charging infrastructure will also be developed by KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited, which will install the necessary charging points for N8.4 billion.
The North East Development Commission will finance the contracts as part of a larger strategy to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the region. President Tinubu had initially approved the procurement of these electric vehicles in October of last year, and has since inspected samples of the vehicles, chargers, and batteries.
This project aims to position North-East Nigeria as a leader in sustainable transportation, contributing to both environmental and economic growth in the region.
