In an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Ambassador Godknows Igali, National Chairman of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), addressed the ongoing crisis in Rivers State and the recent Supreme Court ruling. He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law for peace, stability, and development in the state.
Regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision, Igali highlighted that the state is calm and citizens are satisfied with the judgment. He noted that PANDEF had long advocated for the respect of the rule of law, which guarantees the progress of the state. He expressed optimism that with the Supreme Court’s intervention, issues regarding the state’s governance would be resolved, and development could resume. Igali also appreciated the governor’s commitment to fully implement the Supreme Court’s decisions.
Igali also called for calm, particularly among young people in Rivers, stressing that PANDEF, as the apex sociopolitical body of the South-South region, remains neutral in the matter. PANDEF has been active in advocating for peace outside the courts and continues to work toward amicable solutions.
The discussion then shifted to the implications of withholding federal allocations, with Igali voicing concern over how it could disrupt vital social services, affecting citizens’ livelihoods, healthcare, and education. PANDEF has appealed to the Supreme Court to reconsider such decisions, given their long-term social impact on the people of Rivers State, a key contributor to Nigeria’s oil income.
As a leader of PANDEF, Igali reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peace and stability in the Niger Delta. PANDEF has been mediating between the conflicting parties, and Igali is hopeful for a peaceful resolution, despite the judicial proceedings. The forum, led by Igali and supported by senior leaders such as former governors, continues to prioritize reconciliation and peace-building in the region.
