Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for a more informed public discourse regarding the operations of the Senate, cautioning critics to refrain from making baseless comments on parliamentary matters. Speaking during a meeting with the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum in Abuja, Akpabio emphasized the importance of understanding parliamentary rules before engaging in debates, particularly after the suspension of Kogi Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for violating Senate rules. He stressed that the suspension decision had unanimous backing from lawmakers.

Akpabio expressed concern over increasing uninformed commentary on television and social media, urging the public to seek factual understanding before making statements. He likened those outside the legislature attempting to interpret Senate procedures to individuals misquoting religious texts without adequate knowledge.

In response to the delegation’s concerns, Akpabio highlighted the historical significance of his role as Senate President, emphasizing that the Niger Delta had not held the position in 46 years. He dismissed criticisms of his leadership as politically motivated and asserted his commitment to representing the region, crucial to Nigeria’s economic survival.

Addressing the delegation’s concerns, Akpabio reassured them about Senate intervention in the political crisis in Rivers State and pledged to push for progress on key regional projects, including the Coastal Road project, Maritime University in Oron, and the extension of the Warri-Itakpe rail line to Abuja. The Senate President emphasized that the Senate would continue to work towards the peace and development of the Niger Delta.
