Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are actively working to resolve visa challenges faced by Nigerian travelers, particularly for tourism purposes. This development comes as trade between both nations reached approximately $2.4 billion in 2022, underscoring their strong economic ties.

The UAE remains Nigeria’s leading trading partner within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, while Nigeria plays a vital role as the UAE’s economic gateway to West Africa.

Bilateral Trade Breakdown

In 2022, Nigeria’s exports to the UAE totaled about $520 million, with gold ($489 million), spices ($11.9 million), and wood coal ($7.24 million) being the primary goods. On the other hand, UAE exports to Nigeria amounted to $1.61 billion, featuring refined oil ($352 million), broadcasting equipment ($159 million), and automobiles ($149 million) as key products.

Government Efforts to Ease Visa Challenges

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, acknowledged the difficulties Nigerians have faced when applying for UAE visas. She emphasized that resolving these issues is crucial for strengthening diplomatic ties and encouraging trade growth.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on the UAE to relax its strict visa policies to facilitate easier travel for Nigerians. He stressed that improving access would help promote trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Expert Views on Economic Impact

Economic analysts have welcomed the move, noting that smoother visa processes would encourage business activities and investment. Experts believe easing travel restrictions could unlock greater trade potential, benefiting both nations. However, they caution that Nigeria must address foreign exchange challenges to fully maximize these opportunities.

Outlook for Stronger Ties

The ongoing discussions are expected to enhance cooperation between Nigeria and the UAE across various sectors. Both governments are optimistic that resolving visa concerns will strengthen economic relations, boost investment, and create new opportunities for growth.
