Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The commissioner representing Edo State on the Niger Delta Development Commission Board, Patrick Asowerien, has provided some clarifications over the uproar surrounding the purported commissioning of the Abraka-Oben road by the minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh.
On March 3, members of Ugu Youths Development for Change protested the alleged commissioning of a “non-existent road” by the minister.
The Coordinator of the youths, Monday Osemwenkhae, described the commissioning of the road as a calculated attempt to cover up the continuous neglect of the area that houses the largest gas deposit in West Africa.
However, Asowerien, on Friday, said what the Minister commissioned was the first phase of the 9.8-l kilometre Abraka-Oben road, stating that plans were to launch the second and third phases of the project, adding that the narrative being presented by the protesting youths was misleading.
He stated that the NDDC and other partners were working together to continue to improve the living standards of the people.
Asowerien said, “No one has said that the federal government has completed the Oben road section of the project.”
“Construction has not yet started on the Orhionmwon section of the road which connects to the Benin-Abraka highway.
He commended Momoh for including these crucial link roads in the ministry’s budget for 2025 and assured that the construction of the roads connecting Edo and Delta states is being prioritised.
