The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has officially commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Opebi,” which started on the night of March 7, 2025. The Chief of Staff to the Kabiyesi, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, made this announcement in a statement issued to reporters in Ibadan.

The statement underscored the significance of the ceremony, highlighting it as a critical step in the ascension process of the monarch to the throne.
During this period, a curfew will be enforced in Oyo town from 8 pm to 6 am daily, and any movement within the town will be restricted. Individuals who violate the curfew will face arrest and detention until 7 am the following morning.
The statement also clarified that the ORO IPÊBI is a sacred seclusion process that must be observed with reverence, as the incoming Alaafin enters a state of complete isolation. The coronation ceremony for the new Alaafin is scheduled for April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
