In a statement issued on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission emphasized the need for political parties to strictly adhere to their previously submitted schedules.

INEC’s Stand on Primary Schedules

Olumekun highlighted that INEC, during its weekly review meeting, assessed preparations for the off-cycle Anambra governorship election and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a smooth electoral process.

He recalled that INEC had published the Notice of Election on November 13, 2024, in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, providing over 360 days’ notice before the election date.

As per the election timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between March 20 and April 10 to select their candidates.

Compliance Status and Warning to Political Parties

Olumekun revealed that 12 out of 19 registered parties had so far submitted their primary schedules in compliance with Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022. He urged the remaining seven parties to submit their details without further delay.

“Sudden changes to the dates, venues, and modes of primaries cause unnecessary demobilisation and remobilisation of our monitoring staff, disrupting the commission’s workflow,” Olumekun warned.

He further noted that such disruptions increase the cost of monitoring and add to the overall expenses of conducting elections.

INEC has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent and orderly electoral process in Anambra, urging political parties to avoid last-minute alterations that could affect the smooth conduct of the primaries and subsequent election activities.
