Washington, March 5, 2025 (NAN) – The future of US support for Ukraine is growing increasingly uncertain as National Security Adviser Mike Waltz confirmed on Wednesday that the Biden administration has paused intelligence sharing with Kyiv. This development comes amid a broader reassessment of Washington’s role in the conflict, following a dramatic Oval Office breakdown in relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week.

“We have taken a step back,” Waltz told reporters when asked about the suspension of intelligence sharing. He added that the administration was reviewing “all aspects of this relationship,” signaling a potential shift in US policy toward Ukraine.

The pause follows a decision earlier this week to halt military aid to Ukraine. The US has been a crucial supporter of Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, providing both direct military assistance and critical intelligence. Experts warn that cutting off these resources could have immediate and severe consequences on the battlefield.

Europe Responds to US Uncertainty

The US decision has prompted European leaders to rethink their own commitments to Ukraine’s defense. French President Emmanuel Macron announced a meeting of European army chiefs in Paris next week, stressing that Europe must prepare to act independently if US support diminishes.

“I want to believe the US will stay at our side, but we must be ready if that is not the case,” Macron said in a televised address, calling for increased European defense spending.

Macron also revealed that France, Ukraine, and other partners have been working on a long-term peace plan, though he did not provide specific details.

Oval Office Fallout and Peace Negotiations

The suspension of US aid and intelligence sharing follows a tense meeting between President Trump and Zelensky, during which the Ukrainian leader was reportedly asked to leave after an argument over Kyiv’s war strategy.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed the decision in an interview with Fox Business, stating that Trump questioned Zelensky’s commitment to the peace process.

“President Trump had a real question about whether President Zelensky was committed to the peace process, and he said, ‘Let’s pause, I want to give you a chance to think about that,’” Ratcliffe said.

However, he suggested that the pause might be temporary, pointing to Zelensky’s subsequent statements expressing willingness to negotiate peace. “On the military and intelligence front, the pause that allowed that to happen will go away, and we’ll work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine,” Ratcliffe added.

Waltz echoed this sentiment, suggesting that military aid and intelligence support could be restored soon if Ukraine demonstrates readiness to engage in peace talks. “If we can nail down these negotiations and put some confidence-building measures on the table, then the president will take a hard look at lifting this pause,” he told Fox News.

Potential Consequences on the Battlefield

Experts warn that the suspension of intelligence sharing and military aid could severely impact Ukraine’s defense efforts. US intelligence has been instrumental in providing Kyiv with strategic insights into Russian movements, including troop positions, weapons deployments, and battlefield vulnerabilities.

Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense and retired CIA paramilitary officer, told the BBC that the intelligence cutoff would have an “immediate impact” on Ukraine’s war efforts.

“There is no way to replace the capabilities that US intelligence provides, even with help from European allies,” Mulroy said. “This will likely inspire Russia to push harder on their efforts to take more terrain from Ukraine and move further away from the negotiating table.”

White House Reassessment and Future of Aid

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the issue during a briefing on Wednesday, stating that military assistance had been “paused” rather than entirely withdrawn. “We are reconsidering funding and support while reassessing our broader strategy with Ukraine,” she said.

Since the war began in 2022, Ukraine has heavily relied on US military and intelligence support. The sudden pause in assistance comes at a crucial moment, as Russian forces continue their offensives in key areas. Without real-time intelligence and military aid, Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian advances may be significantly weakened.

While Waltz and Ratcliffe have hinted that aid could be resumed, the timeline remains uncertain, leaving Kyiv and its European allies in a precarious position as they navigate the evolving dynamics of the war.
