Washington, March 5, 2025 (NAN) – The United States and Israel have dismissed a $53 billion Arab League proposal for Gaza’s post-war reconstruction, instead supporting President Donald Trump’s controversial plan to resettle the territory’s 2.1 million Palestinians elsewhere.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Arab initiative, unveiled at an emergency summit in Cairo, envisions a phased rebuilding process over five years, temporary governance by independent Palestinian technocrats, and international peacekeepers overseeing security. Palestinian leaders, including Hamas and the Palestinian Authority (PA), welcomed the plan.
However, the US and Israel argue the proposal fails to reflect current realities. Israel’s foreign ministry said it remains “rooted in outdated perspectives,” while the White House insisted Gaza is “uninhabitable” and its population “cannot humanely live in a territory covered in debris and unexploded ordnance.”
Trump’s Vision for Gaza
Last month, Trump proposed that the US take control of Gaza and relocate its population to Egypt, Jordan, and other Arab states, describing this as an opportunity for displaced Palestinians to have “much better housing” and no right of return. He envisions transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Trump’s plan has been met with outrage across the Arab world, with the Arab League calling any forced displacement a “crime against humanity and ethnic cleansing.”
Ceasefire at Risk as Israel Blocks Aid
Meanwhile, Gaza’s fragile ceasefire agreement hangs in the balance. Israel has blocked humanitarian aid to pressure Hamas into accepting a new US-brokered deal that would extend the truce in exchange for hostage releases.
Hamas has rejected any proposal that does not lead to a complete Israeli troop withdrawal and an end to the war.
As the humanitarian crisis deepens, international pressure is mounting on both the US and Israel to reconsider their stance on Gaza’s future.
