Lagos, March 5, 2025 – Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo, has taken legal action against controversial social media commentator, Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, over alleged defamatory statements. Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!VeryDarkMan had accused Chinwo of financial misconduct, claiming that she diverted funds from shows without remitting payments to her former record label, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu. He also alleged that the singer breached her contract before exiting the label, fueling controversy among her fans and the gospel music industry.
In her legal suit, Chinwo asserts that the accusations are baseless, malicious, and intended to tarnish her hard-earned reputation. She maintains that her departure from the record label followed due process and that the claims against her have no factual backing. Through her legal representatives, the Obinna Law Firm, the singer is demanding a public apology, a retraction of the statements, and compensation for damages amounting to N1.1 billion.
This lawsuit adds to the growing list of legal battles involving VeryDarkMan, known for his outspoken nature and controversial takes on public figures. Meanwhile, Chinwo continues to enjoy massive success in the gospel music industry, with her songs topping charts and inspiring millions.
Legal experts suggest that defamation cases involving public figures can be complex, requiring substantial proof of reputational damage. If the court rules in Chinwo’s favor, it could set a precedent for social media accountability in Nigeria.
As the case unfolds, all eyes remain on the courtroom, where both parties will present their arguments in what promises to be a high-profile legal showdown.
