Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from conducting any disciplinary proceedings against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. This decision follows an ex parte application filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The senator, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, had been summoned to appear before the Senate’s disciplinary committee following a heated exchange with Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20, 2025. Akpoti-Uduaghan sought the court’s intervention to prevent the committee from proceeding with the investigation into the alleged misconduct.
In her application, Akpoti-Uduaghan requested the court to declare that any action taken during the ongoing proceedings would be null and void. She also asked for the defendants to be served with the originating summons and related documents through substituted means.
Justice Egwuatu granted an interim injunction, restraining the Senate’s ethics committee from continuing with the investigation. The judge also directed that the defendants be served with the order within 72 hours and adjourned the case to March 10, 2025, for further proceedings, during which the defendants will be required to show cause as to why the injunction should not be made permanent.
The ruling provides temporary relief to Akpoti-Uduaghan, pending the hearing of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.
