Trump Accuses Zelensky of Exploiting US Support Amid Ongoing Tensions

Date:

President Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of not wanting peace with Russia and of exploiting US support for his own gain. The feud between Trump and Zelensky has intensified over disagreements concerning negotiations with Russia and the terms for a potential ceasefire. Zelensky has insisted that the US must first provide security guarantees to Kiev before any agreement can be made.

Trump took to social media on Monday, responding to a news report by the AP, which quoted Zelensky as saying that an agreement to end the war remains “very, very far away” and that no steps have been taken yet. Zelensky emphasized that any peace deal must be “just, honest, and most importantly, sustainable.” In response, Trump criticized Zelensky’s statement, writing on Truth Social, “This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!”

Trump continued by accusing Zelensky of not wanting peace as long as he has America’s backing, asserting, “This guy doesn’t want there to be peace as long as he has America’s backing.”

In addition, Trump pointed to comments made by European leaders during a meeting with Zelensky, where they reportedly stated that they cannot handle the situation without the US. Trump criticized the statement, questioning the lack of a show of strength against Russia.

Earlier, Trump had also accused Zelensky of disrespecting the US during a contentious White House meeting on Friday. According to Trump, Zelensky had been prepared to sign a deal that would have allowed the US to develop Ukraine’s critical mineral deposits. However, the deal was called off after Zelensky’s public disagreement with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance, who accused Zelensky of being ungrateful for American aid.

Zelensky, who previously stated that Ukraine had a “low chance” of defeating Russia without American support, has expressed frustration that Trump had reopened direct talks with Moscow without his approval. Trump has responded by accusing Zelensky of acting as a “dictator,” arguing that he had no position to criticize how the negotiations were being handled.
