(Naija247news, Lagos, March 3, 2025) – The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has praised members of the State House of Assembly for prioritizing collective goals over personal interests in resolving the 49-day speakership crisis that disrupted legislative activities.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The crisis, which began on January 13, led to the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of abuse of office and misconduct. In his place, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was installed, backed by 32 out of 40 lawmakers, sparking intense divisions and forcing Assembly staff to work remotely for safety reasons.
After multiple interventions from the APC leadership, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and a high-powered committee, lawmakers on Monday reinstated Obasa as Speaker following Meranda’s resignation.
Victory for Democracy – APC
Reacting to the development, Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, described the resolution as a victory for democracy and commended lawmakers for setting aside personal interests.
“We congratulate the people of Lagos, members of the House of Assembly, APC leaders, and party members for amicably resolving the rift,” Oladejo stated.
He emphasized that valuable lessons had been learned, adding that the House was now more united and committed to serving Lagos State.
“Ultimately, this is a victory for democracy and highlights the sophistication of Lagos politics, which stands above common standards,” he said.
APC’s Role in the Resolution
Oladejo clarified that while the APC respected the independence of the Assembly, the party provided guidance when lawmakers sought intervention.
“As a truly democratic party, the APC refrained from unnecessary interference in legislative matters. However, when the crisis persisted, lawmakers deferred to the party for wise counsel,” he explained.
With 39 out of 40 Assembly members belonging to the APC, Oladejo stressed that the party’s focus was on stabilizing governance in the best interest of Lagosians.
Dismissing opposition parties’ reactions to the crisis, he called their celebration premature, labeling the situation “a storm in a teacup.”
