LONDON — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Sunday that he intends to speak with King Charles III about protecting Canada’s sovereignty as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to claim that the country should become the 51st U.S. state.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Trump’s repeated comments have stirred outrage in Canada, with officials categorically rejecting any discussion of Canada ever becoming part of the United States. The president’s rhetoric has increasingly alarmed Canadian leaders, raising concerns about U.S. intentions toward its northern neighbor.
While in London for a summit on Ukraine, Trudeau confirmed that his scheduled meeting with King Charles—Canada’s head of state—would include discussions on matters of national importance.
“I can tell you that nothing is more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation,” Trudeau declared.
Trump’s Escalating Remarks on Canada
Since securing another term in office last November, Trump has intensified his focus on Canada, frequently referring to it as the “51st state” and making disparaging remarks about Trudeau, calling him a “governor” rather than a prime minister.
The U.S. president has also imposed tariffs on Canada, which are set to take effect on Tuesday, suggesting that they could be lifted if Canada agreed to become part of the United States.
Trudeau has previously warned that Trump’s ongoing remarks about integrating Canada into the U.S. for access to its natural resources represent “a real thing” and should not be dismissed as mere rhetoric.
King Charles’ Silence Draws Questions
Trump’s escalating comments have prompted some Canadians to question why King Charles has not yet spoken out in defense of Canada’s sovereignty.
However, constitutional tradition dictates that the British monarch only acts on the advice of the Canadian prime minister when it comes to matters involving the Commonwealth nation. This means King Charles has limited power to intervene unless directly advised by Trudeau’s government.
There is growing speculation that the monarch could soon be forced to address the issue. Last week, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended an invitation for Trump to make an unprecedented second state visit to the United Kingdom. This visit could provide King Charles with an opportunity to raise concerns over Canadian sovereignty directly with the U.S. president.
Canada’s Continued Support for Ukraine
In addition to defending Canada’s independence, Trudeau reiterated the country’s strong support for Ukraine during Sunday’s security summit in London.
The prime minister announced a new round of sanctions against Russia, further underscoring Canada’s commitment to countering aggression in Eastern Europe.
As tensions with the U.S. continue to rise, Trudeau’s meeting with King Charles is expected to serve as a significant moment in reaffirming Canada’s sovereignty and strengthening its international alliances.
