The abduction is suspected to have been carried out by terrorists believed to be members of Boko Haram/ISWAP.
The incident occurred along the troubled Damaturu-Biu road near Kamuya village. Kamuya village is about 10km from Buratai, the hometown of the former Chief of Army Staff, Yusufu Tukur Buratai.
According to Vanguard, Professor Eljuma, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at NAUB, was among the notable contenders for the position of Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
The development has reportedly prompted the university management to convene an emergency meeting regarding the professor’s abduction.
Prior to this incident, the area has experienced frequent abductions, bomb explosions, and killings for the past 10 years.
On March 2, 2025, suspected ISWAP/Boko Haram militants abducted an unspecified number of travellers from two Golf cars and a Borno Express bus along the Damaturu-Biu road.
Reports indicate that all female passengers were released, while the male passengers, including Professor Abubakar Eljuma, remain in captivity.
“We request your prayers in this holy month of Ramadan for their quick release,” a reliable source was quoted as saying.
