The wife of Nigeria’s Senate President, Ekaette Akpabio, has filed multiple lawsuits at the Federal High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The lawsuits stem from allegations of a breach of fundamental human rights and defamation, following statements made by the Kogi Central senator during an interview on Arise News.
In one of the suits, Akpabio is seeking a perpetual injunction restraining Akpoti-Uduaghan from making any further statements deemed scandalous. She is also demanding ₦250 billion in punitive damages for the alleged infringement of her fundamental human rights. Additionally, she is asking the court to impose a separate ₦1 billion in damages for the alleged ruinous effects of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s defamatory statements.
In another suit, Mrs. Akpabio seeks a declaration that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claim on Arise News—that her husband, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, made sexual advances toward her—has caused significant damage to her reputation and her family.
She is further requesting a court order mandating Akpoti-Uduaghan to issue a formal written retraction of her statements and tender an unconditional apology to her and her family. The apology must be published in two national newspapers, including ThisDay.
The legal battle underscores the escalating tension between the two prominent female politicians, as Akpabio moves to challenge what she describes as defamatory and harmful allegations.
