The number of Nigerians seeking international education continues to rise, with 20,029 students enrolling in U.S. colleges and universities during the 2023/2024 academic year, marking a 13.5% increase from the previous year, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange.
As part of the growing trend of “Japa”—a term referring to Nigerians emigrating for better education and career prospects—many are also turning to the United Kingdom, where several universities now accept Higher National Diploma (HND) and third-class degrees for master’s programs.
While admission criteria vary by institution, many UK universities have relaxed entry requirements, allowing Nigerian graduates with lower classifications to pursue advanced studies. Some of the top universities that welcome HND and third-class degree holders include:
• Swansea University
• University of Essex
• University of Plymouth
• University of South Wales
• University of Hertfordshire
• Edinburgh Napier University
• University of Suffolk
• London Metropolitan University
• University College Birmingham
• Solent University
• Robert Gordon University
• University of Sunderland
• Sheffield Hallam University
The UK’s flexible admission policies are expected to drive more Nigerian students abroad, reinforcing the growing preference for foreign degrees over local options. This shift underscores ongoing concerns about education quality in Nigeria, where universities continue to face challenges in learning outcomes and global competitiveness.
