Microsoft Nigeria to Invest N1.5 Billion in AI Training for One Million Nigerians

Date:

Microsoft Nigeria, through its AI Skilling Initiative, has announced a N1.5 billion ($1 million) investment to train one million Nigerians in Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the next two years.

Ola Williams, Managing Director of Microsoft Nigeria, emphasized that the initiative aims to equip Nigerians with AI skills to enhance job opportunities, foster business growth, and position the country competitively in the global AI space.

AI is projected to contribute an estimated $15 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2030, with the market expected to grow at an annual rate of 27.08% from 2025 to 2030.

Microsoft Africa President Lilian Barnard highlighted AI’s potential to boost Africa’s economy, stating that if the continent captures just 10% of the global AI market, it could add $1.5 trillion to Africa’s GDP by 2050.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national goals to drive economic growth, technological advancement, and digital inclusion. Training will be free and conducted in collaboration with government agencies, universities, and tech hubs like Tech for Dev, Woodlab, and Data Science Nigeria.

This investment builds on Microsoft’s previous efforts, including its 3MTT partnership with the Nigerian government, which has already engaged four million Nigerians in digital skills training.
