KINSHASA, Feb 22 (Reuters) – Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi will establish a unity government, his spokesperson announced on Saturday, as he faces mounting domestic criticism over his handling of the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel offensive in the country’s eastern provinces.
The M23 insurgency has led to the capture of large territories in eastern Congo, including areas rich in valuable mineral resources, raising fears of a broader conflict. The situation has emboldened some opposition figures to openly question Tshisekedi’s ability to remain in power.
Call for Unity Amid Military Setbacks
Speaking at a meeting of the ruling Sacred Union coalition on Saturday, Tshisekedi urged his allies to set aside internal divisions. “We must unite … let’s stand together to face the enemy,” he said.
Presidency spokesperson Tina Salama confirmed that Tshisekedi would form a government of national unity and introduce leadership changes within the coalition. However, she did not provide specifics on the new government’s composition or timeline.
Since the beginning of the year, Congo’s military has suffered consecutive defeats in North and South Kivu provinces, intensifying public discontent over the government’s military strategy.
Opposition Criticism
Tshisekedi’s decision to form a unity government has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders.
“His management is one of the causes of the current crisis,” said opposition figure Herve Diakiese, dismissing the move as a political maneuver.
“Tshisekedi is more concerned with saving his power, whereas we are more concerned with saving the Congo, and this can be done with or without him,” Diakiese added.
As tensions rise, Tshisekedi faces pressure to demonstrate effective leadership and restore stability, with the future of his presidency increasingly in question.
