In response to a challenge in the game, Mourinho remarked that a Turkish referee would have issued a yellow card “after the big dive and their [Galatasaray’s] bench jumping around like monkeys.” Galatasaray has filed complaints with football authorities and announced plans to pursue criminal proceedings, citing “racist statements.”
Fenerbahce quickly rejected the allegations, asserting that Mourinho’s remarks had been misinterpreted, taken out of context, and distorted. The club also indicated their intention to take legal action against the accusations.
In a post on social media, Drogba, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea for two separate spells, strongly defended his former coach. Drogba, who is Black, wrote, “Trust me when I tell you I have known Jose for 25 years and he is not a racist and history [past and recent] is there to prove it.” He further stated, “How can my ‘Dad’ be a racist? Come on guys.”
The Turkish Football Federation’s disciplinary board is expected to make an announcement on the matter in the coming days.
