Obasa May Return as Lagos Assembly Speaker After APC Intervention
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in January, could be reinstated to his position. Reports indicate that his security details have been reinstated, while those of his successor, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.
Meranda, who was Obasa’s deputy before his impeachment, was unanimously elected as Speaker following his removal, making her the first female to hold the position in the history of the state. However, despite not officially resigning yet, Meranda’s position appears to have been jeopardized following recent intervention by key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who are working to resolve the crisis in the House of Assembly.
Over the weekend, high-ranking APC figures, including former APC National Chairman Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Muiz Banire, and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), met to discuss the matter. During the meeting, it was reportedly decided that Meranda should vacate her seat, with sources confirming that the resolution favored Obasa’s return as Speaker.
According to insiders, the meeting concluded that Obasa’s impeachment was illegal, and lawmakers were instructed to reinstate him. While the exact timing of the House’s reconvening to formalize the changes remains unclear, the shift in favor of Obasa’s return seems imminent.
Meranda had previously adjourned plenary indefinitely after a disturbance in the Assembly caused by an invasion from operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
