Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, clarified that the withdrawal was part of a routine personnel audit, not a targeted action.
“As I speak with you, the audit of the police personnel attached to Hon. Mojisola Meranda has been completed, and the police personnel have been returned for her protection,” Jimoh said on Thursday evening.
He emphasized that several prominent personalities had also undergone the same audit, dismissing claims that the exercise was politically motivated.
Obasa Insists He Was Never Removed
The withdrawal of Meranda’s security team added a new twist to the leadership battle between her and former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa, who was impeached over allegations of impropriety, stormed the Assembly complex on Thursday with his supporters, claiming he was still the legitimate Speaker.
“Obasa is the Speaker,” his supporters chanted as he addressed reporters.
“I have never been removed. Impeachment or removal must follow due process,” Obasa declared.
Lawmakers Stand Firm Behind Meranda
Despite Obasa’s claim, lawmakers loyal to Meranda rejected his assertion, reaffirming their confidence in her leadership.
The crisis escalated on February 17, when security agents clashed with legislative staff at the Assembly complex. However, 36 lawmakers have since passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, solidifying her position as the Speaker.
