GENEVA, Feb 25 (Naija247news) – Dozens of nations rallied behind Ukraine at a United Nations event in Geneva on Tuesday, reaffirming their commitment to Kyiv’s sovereignty and resistance against Russian aggression. The gathering, held a day after the U.N. Security Council passed a U.S.-drafted resolution that took a neutral stance on the war, marked a turning point in Washington’s foreign policy and signaled growing concerns among European allies.

Global Support Amid Changing U.S. Stance

The Geneva meeting, organized to commemorate Ukraine’s resilience, followed the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion and highlighted divisions in global diplomacy. While the Security Council’s resolution omitted explicit language on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the General Assembly rejected Washington’s approach, instead passing motions more favorable to Kyiv.

Norway’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik assured Ukraine of continued international backing, emphasizing that global allies remain steadfast in their support.

“You are not alone. Norway and other countries, all the countries who are here, but also other countries, will continue to support you as you fight for your territorial integrity, your sovereignty, and your human dignity,” he told a packed room of diplomats and ministers.

Since the start of the invasion in 2022, thousands of Ukrainian lives have been lost, and over six million people remain refugees. Moscow, on the other hand, has maintained that its military operation was necessary due to NATO’s eastward expansion.

European Nations Step Up in Response to U.S. Policy Shift

Estonia’s Undersecretary for Global Affairs, Minna-Liina Lind, expressed deep concern over the Security Council’s decision to pass a resolution that failed to explicitly recognize Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

“I am extremely worried that the resolution did not include clear wording on territorial integrity,” she stated. “But I think European resolve is even greater. When there’s someone else not as strong, the others fill in.”

The meeting, co-organized by Ukraine and Liechtenstein on the sidelines of the U.N. Human Rights Council, demonstrated that despite shifting U.S. policy, Ukraine still has strong support from European and international allies.

Diplomatic Victory for Ukraine at the U.N. General Assembly

While the Security Council’s resolution reflected President Donald Trump’s new approach towards Russia, Ukraine secured a significant diplomatic win at the U.N. General Assembly, where a stronger stance was adopted against Moscow. The failure of the U.S. resolution to gain traction in the General Assembly was seen as a sign of international resistance to Washington’s new direction.

Most countries attending the Geneva event were European, including France and Germany, but nations such as Turkey, South Korea, Australia, and Japan were also present. While the United States sent a delegate, they did not take the floor, further underscoring the shift in Washington’s involvement.

Ukraine Calls for Continued Support

During the meeting, Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.N., Yevheniia Filipenko, became emotional as she appealed to the global community to continue supporting Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts and ensure accountability for war crimes committed since Russia’s invasion.

“The road ahead is very challenging, but when we are united, we can prevail,” she declared.

As Ukraine faces new geopolitical realities, its European and international partners remain crucial in shaping the country’s future. The Geneva gathering reinforced the message that while Washington’s stance may be shifting, Ukraine’s allies remain unwavering in their commitment to its sovereignty and security.
