Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has urged former military president Ibrahim Babangida to name those responsible for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election. Babangida recently acknowledged in his memoir that MKO Abiola won the election held 32 years ago. However, Kalu believes the memoir did not fully address the key questions surrounding the annulment and called for a second volume that would shed light on those involved in halting the election’s declaration.

I was present during the events of June 12, and I know what happened. Babangida should call out the names of those responsible for preventing the election declaration,” Kalu stated.
The senator also took the opportunity to advocate for the formal recognition of MKO Abiola as one of Nigeria’s past presidents. He urged President Bola Tinubu to place Abiola’s portrait alongside those of other former leaders in the Presidential Villa. Kalu praised former President Muhammadu Buhari for posthumously honoring Abiola but emphasized that further recognition was needed to acknowledge Abiola’s significant contribution to Nigeria’s democratic history.
“Since Abiola won, his picture should be placed among Nigeria’s past presidents. I commend former President Buhari for giving him a national honor, but I also appeal to President Tinubu to officially recognize him and place his image where it belongs. This would help bring succor to his family,” Kalu added.
