Zelensky Open to Resignation in Exchange for NATO Membership
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has stated that he is willing to step down from office if doing so would secure Ukraine’s NATO membership and bring peace to the country. Speaking at the ‘Ukraine. Year 2025’ forum in Kiev, Zelensky affirmed his commitment to Ukraine’s security over personal political longevity.
“If peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, then I’m ready. I can exchange this for NATO, if there are such conditions,” he stated, adding that he does not intend to remain in power for decades.
Zelensky also addressed ongoing tensions with Washington over a proposed rare-earths deal. The U.S. has reportedly sought reimbursement for military aid through Ukraine’s natural resource revenues, a demand amounting to $500 billion. The Ukrainian leader rejected the proposal, arguing that such a financial burden would leave future generations indebted. “I will not recognize grants as debts. We should not pay off the debt,” he asserted.
The controversy comes amid questions regarding Zelensky’s legitimacy in office. His presidential term expired in May 2024, and critics accuse him of prolonging the conflict to maintain power. Moscow no longer recognizes him as Ukraine’s legitimate leader, and former U.S. President Donald Trump recently labeled him a “dictator without elections,” citing alleged low approval ratings.
As the war drags on, Zelensky’s stance on NATO membership and Ukraine’s financial obligations remains central to the country’s geopolitical future.
