Rising Insecurity Linked to Mining Activities

Governor Mutfwang outlined the reasons behind the suspension, emphasizing the increase in illegal mining and the growing inflow of foreigners into mining areas, which has further exacerbated security challenges in the state. These activities have been linked to several criminal offenses, including:
• Rape
• Banditry
• Illegal possession of firearms
• Drug trafficking
• Kidnapping

The governor highlighted the severity of these issues, stressing that these criminal activities were not only affecting the safety of residents but were also undermining the state’s economic stability and social fabric.

Establishment of Technical Committee

To better manage and regulate mining in Plateau, the governor has inaugurated a technical committee tasked with verifying and identifying licensed operators in the state. The committee will be responsible for ensuring that mining activities are carried out legally and safely, while also addressing issues related to illegal miners.

Collaborating with Federal Government for Regulation

In addition to state-level measures, the Plateau State government will collaborate with the Federal Government to review existing standards and create a more effective monitoring framework. This will involve coordinating efforts between the state, local governments, host communities, and mineral rights holders to ensure that mining activities are in line with national regulations and contribute positively to local development.

A Holistic Review of Security and Development

The state government has also promised a comprehensive review of the security situation in all mining areas, with the aim of implementing strategies for community development. Governor Mutfwang stressed the importance of social agreements between mineral rights holders and host communities, ensuring that mining activities contribute to the socio-economic welfare of the people, while also addressing the insecurity stemming from illegal practices.

This executive order marks a significant step towards balancing economic growth with security and sustainability in Plateau State.
