The incident, SaharaReporters gathered occurred, when a police patrol team from the ‘A’ Division Police Command in Minna, led by ASP Ibrahim Audu Paiko, was attacked by hoodlums while recovering suspected stolen materials near the Obasanjo Complex.
A source told SaharaReporters that the patrol team had sighted a group of road construction workers carrying iron rods suspected to be stolen, but when the workers abandoned the materials and fled, the police were suddenly attacked by another group of workers and hoodlums.
“In an attempt to escape the mob, ASP Ibrahim Audu fired a shot, which struck Oladimeji, who was passing by at the time on a motorcycle. She suffered a gunshot wound to her lap and additional injuries after falling off the motorcycle,” the source noted.
According to the source, Oladimeji was rushed to Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Specialist Hospital in Minna, where medical personnel confirmed that she suffered a fracture in her waist, but no bullet fragments remained in her body.
Confirming the incident to SaharaReporters, the Niger State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said that the police team officer has been arrested.
According to him, “On 21st February, 2025 at about 12.30pm, Police surveillance team of A Div Minna embarked on an observation patrol around Obasanjo Complex Minna, while they sighted some road construction workers with suspected stolen iron rods.
“On sighting the team, the workers abandoned the rods and took to their heels.
“However, the police team attempted to evacuate the suspected stolen items and while in the process, the team was attacked by other reinforced workers and some public urchins with stones and other offensive weapons damaging police patrol vehicle, as a result of this, in an attempt to escape being mobbed, the team leader fired a shot which unfortunately hit one female officer of immigration service on the lap who was passing on a motorcycle.
“She was immediately rushed to the Specialist hospital, Minna for medical attention. Meanwhile, the police team has been arrested and detained for disciplinary action. Further investigation continues please.”
The authorities have urged residents to remain calm as security agencies continue efforts to maintain law and order in the state.
SaharaReporters reports that this incident comes amid recent protest in Minna, where 25 individuals were arrested in connection with a demonstration over escalating food prices.
