Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has issued an executive order suspending all mining activities in the state, citing security reasons.
The state governor said the suspension, which took effect immediately, would remain in place until further notice.
Mutfwang in an executive order, dated February 21, 2024, explained that the move is necessary to protect mining areas and ensure only licensed individuals can enter or leave the premises.
“There is an increase in illegal mining activities and insecurity associated with such mining activities in various Local Government Areas in Plateau State,” he stated.
The governor also expressed concerns about the influx of foreigners in mining areas, which has contributed to insecurity, including offences like rape, banditry, and kidnapping.
“I deemed it necessary to suspend all mining activities in Plateau State for security reasons,” Mutfwang said.
To address the issue, the state government would collaborate with the federal government to develop standards and a monitoring framework for mining activities.
The government would also conduct a holistic review of the security situation in mining areas and ensure that mineral rights holders contribute to local communities through a community development agreement (CDA).
Mutfwang emphasised the need to protect mining areas and ensure only licensed individuals can enter or leave the premises. “There is the need to ensure measures taken to protect places of mining activities in Plateau State and to ensure only persons that are licensed to conduct mining can enter or leave such premises,” he said.
