“Labour Party Denies Zoning 2027 Presidency to South-East”
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Labour Party (LP) has denied claims that it has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South-East, calling the reports a misinterpretation. In a statement from the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the LP clarified that comments made by National Chairman Julius Abure were taken out of context.
The LP emphasized that it is a national party with widespread support across the country, making zoning irrelevant to its decision-making process. Ifoh explained that Abure’s advice to South-East members was not about zoning but about fostering alliances with other regions to enhance their chances of securing the presidency. He encouraged the Igbos to seek stronger political relationships, drawing a parallel with the Yoruba political bloc’s success in realignments.
The LP reaffirmed that its constitution prohibits zoning and that candidates must emerge through competitive, democratic processes. The statement also expressed regret over the media’s misrepresentation of the party’s position.
In the 2023 general elections, LP, with presidential candidate Peter Obi, achieved significant victories, winning seats across the north and southern states, and it is working to build on that success for future elections.
