The Kaduna State Government has condemned the ongoing strike by the Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), calling it an act of sabotage.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The lecturers began their strike on Tuesday over unresolved demands with the government. However, in a statement signed by the Commissioner of Education, Muhammad Sani-Bello, the government argued that the dispute predates Governor Uba Sani’s administration and that steps have already been taken to address the concerns.
The government criticized ASUU for disrupting KASU’s academic calendar, stating that the union should have allowed negotiations to reach a resolution instead of taking action that could reverse progress made in the state’s education sector.
The dispute primarily revolves around unpaid salaries from May to September 2022 and Earned Academic Allowances from 2015 to 2020. While these issues originated before Governor Sani’s tenure, the commissioner noted that the administration has shown commitment to resolving them, including a proposed installment-based payment plan.
Despite the governor’s willingness to engage with ASUU upon his return from an official trip, the union has remained firm on its stance. The government accused certain individuals within the union of pursuing a hidden agenda aimed at undermining the administration’s progress in education over the past 20 months.
