A Federal High Court in Osogbo has ruled that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) must conduct the local government elections as scheduled on February 22. Naija247news reports that the court’s decision comes amid a heated legal battle between the state government and opposition parties, who had sought to stop the polls over alleged irregularities.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to Naija247news, the ruling was delivered on Thursday by Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, who dismissed the suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other plaintiffs. The judge stated that the plaintiffs failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify the postponement of the elections. “The court finds no merit in the application. The elections must proceed as planned,” Justice Ayo-Emmanuel declared.
Naija247news gathered that the APC and other opposition parties had accused OSIEC of bias and lack of transparency in the preparations for the polls. They alleged that the commission was working in favor of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and demanded more time to allow for a level playing field. However, OSIEC Chairman, Segun Oladitan, denied the allegations, stating that the commission had followed due process in organizing the elections.
Naija247news understands that the court’s decision has been met with mixed reactions. While the PDP hailed the ruling as a victory for democracy, the APC described it as a setback for fair elections. “This judgment is a clear indication that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man,” said PDP spokesperson, Oladele Olabamiji. In contrast, APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, told Naija247news that the party would explore other legal options to challenge the outcome of the polls.
According to Naija247news, the elections will cover all 332 wards in the state, with over 1.5 million registered voters expected to participate. OSIEC has assured residents of adequate security and a transparent process. “We are fully prepared to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. We urge all stakeholders to cooperate with us,” Oladitan said.
Naija247news reports that the court’s decision has heightened political tensions in Osun State, with both the PDP and APC mobilizing their supporters for the polls. Analysts have warned that the outcome of the elections could have far-reaching implications for the state’s political landscape.
As the election date approaches, Naija247news gathered that security agencies have been placed on high alert to prevent violence and ensure a peaceful process. Residents have also been urged to come out en masse and exercise their democratic rights.
