PDP Chieftain Segun Sowunmi Rejects APC’s Push for State of Emergency in Osun, Warns Against Muzzling Opposition
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly rejected any plans by the APC-controlled Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Osun State. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Sowunmi dismissed the suggestion, questioning its justification, and pointed to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s handling of crises during Vice President Kashim Shettima’s tenure as governor of Borno.
This came after APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru called for a state of emergency over the ongoing local government crisis in Osun, which has resulted in clashes between APC and PDP members, leaving at least six people dead. Sowunmi criticized the government for not acting sooner when Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, of the PDP, raised alarms about APC-backed security agencies attempting to seize control of local government councils.
He further warned the APC against the idea of turning Nigeria into a one-party state, stressing that the opposition would not tolerate such actions. Sowunmi called for immediate security measures and an end to what he described as “brigandage” following the clashes, emphasizing that the opposition would not be silenced by force.
