The Federal Government has officially flagged off the dualisation of three re-awarded sections of the Ajaokuta-Benin Road, marking a significant step toward improving transportation infrastructure and boosting economic activities in the region. According to Naija247news, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, describing the project as a “game-changer” for the affected communities. “This dualisation project will not only improve travel times but also create jobs, reduce vehicle operating costs, and open up new economic opportunities,” Fashola stated during the event.

Naija247news gathered that the re-awarded sections include the Ajaokuta-Itobe, Itobe-Anyigba, and Anyigba-Egume routes, which have been plagued by years of neglect and poor maintenance. The project, which is expected to be completed within 36 months, will feature modern drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, and solar-powered streetlights.

Naija247news understands that the initiative has been welcomed by residents and stakeholders in the region, who have long decried the deplorable state of the road. A community leader from Ajaokuta, who spoke to Naija247news, expressed optimism about the project’s impact. “This road is a lifeline for our people. Its dualisation will bring relief to farmers, traders, and commuters who have suffered for years,” he said.

According to Naija247news, the project is being executed by a consortium of indigenous contractors, in line with the government’s commitment to promoting local content. The contractors have assured the public of their commitment to delivering high-quality work within the stipulated timeframe.

Naija247news reports that the Ajaokuta-Benin Road is a critical artery for the transportation of agricultural produce, solid minerals, and other goods. Its dualisation is expected to reduce travel time, enhance safety, and lower transportation costs, thereby boosting trade and commerce in the region.

However, some stakeholders have called for sustained funding and oversight to ensure the project’s timely completion. “We have seen many projects abandoned due to poor funding or mismanagement. The government must ensure that this one does not suffer the same fate,” an industry expert told Naija247news.

As the project kicks off, Naija247news gathered that the Federal Government has pledged to monitor its progress closely and address any challenges that may arise. The dualisation of the Ajaokuta-Benin Road is seen as a testament to the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth.
