Lagos State House of Assembly Denies Rumoured Defection of 27 Members to Labour Party

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Ogundipe Olukayode, described the reports as “false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.” He further explained that the rumours were designed to “sow discord and confusion within the Assembly and among the good people of Lagos State.”
The denial comes amid heightened tensions within the legislature, which has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker and the subsequent election of Mojisola Meranda. The legislature was further disrupted on Monday when armed security officers reportedly blocked Meranda from entering the Assembly, though she later presided over the session tearfully as lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in her leadership.
The Assembly stressed that the ongoing leadership disputes were internal matters and that no members were planning to defect from the ruling party. “These events in no way suggest any intention by members to leave the party,” the statement read. “We were elected under the leadership of the ruling party. The ruling party remains united and focused on delivering its mandate to the people of Lagos State.”
The Assembly concluded by accusing agents of destabilisation of spreading falsehoods to cause unnecessary tension within the legislative body.
