This move follows Niger’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alongside Mali and Burkina Faso.

Cross-border traders and commuters are already facing difficulties, as Nigerien authorities no longer recognize the ECOWAS passport as valid identification.
Some travelers report that Niger has introduced a new national passport to replace the ECOWAS document. Mansur Abdullah, a trader, confirmed the development, stating that some Nigerians have been turned back at the border, causing disruptions to trade and daily movement.
Additionally, reports suggest that Nigerien security officials are allegedly exploiting the situation by demanding bribes ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 CFA to allow ECOWAS passport holders entry.
Despite the restrictions, trade activities at the border remain unaffected for now. However, concerns are growing that the Nigerien military government may impose further restrictions, including limiting motorcycle movement between both countries.
Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Commission has stated that it is unaware of Niger’s new policy barring ECOWAS passport holders from entry.
