The artifacts, looted from the Kingdom of Benin during a British military expedition in 1897, have been housed in Dutch museums for decades. Their return follows growing international efforts to repatriate stolen cultural heritage to their countries of origin.

This move aligns with broader restitution efforts by European nations, including Germany and the United Kingdom, to return Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.

The artifacts will be handed over to Nigerian authorities, reinforcing the country’s efforts to reclaim and preserve its historical heritage.
