LAGOS – The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has dismissed reports claiming she has resigned, describing them as false and the work of mischief-makers.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! Her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, debunked the rumors on Wednesday, stating that Meranda remains in office and continues to carry out her legislative duties.
“I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from. This is the handiwork of mischief makers working for the impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who have been commissioned to spread fake news on social media to mislead the public and maintain pressure on the current leadership of the House. We are aware of this, and it will not succeed,” Ajiboye stated.
The rumors reportedly stemmed from a “fake resignation letter” that was widely circulated online on Monday by “paid bloggers.” The letter, dated February 17, 2025, suggested that Meranda had stepped down, but further checks showed it lacked an official signature.
“I urge members of the public to ignore such reports, as they are fake, unfounded, and without any iota of truth,” Ajiboye added.
The clarification comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos Assembly, following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa has rejected his removal, insisting he remains the legitimate Speaker and that the process leading to Meranda’s election was unlawful.
Addressing supporters at his official residence in Ikeja, Obasa alleged that a “fake mace” was used to install Meranda as Speaker, and that security forces were deployed to intimidate his loyalists on the day of his impeachment. He also claimed police officers had surrounded his home and restricted his family’s movement.
Despite Obasa’s claims, the state lawmakers have urged Lagos residents to disregard his statements, warning him against heating up the political atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Obasa has vowed to challenge his removal in court, further extending the leadership standoff in the Lagos Assembly.
