Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The United Action Front of the Civil Society (UAFCS) has strongly condemned the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by armed security operatives, describing it as a grave assault on democracy.
In a statement issued by its Chairman, Olawale Okunniyi, the group decried the presence of state security agents within the legislative chambers, labelling it a “barbaric” act that undermines Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
It is a taboo for security operatives to intrude into the democratic affairs of any government institution, especially the parliament, under any circumstances,” the statement read.
The organisation further demanded the immediate withdrawal of Department of State Services (DSS) operatives from the assembly premises and urged security agencies to respect democratic norms.
“Nigeria cannot afford to revert to the police-state tactics reminiscent of the dark days of Abacha’s military rule,” the UAFCS warned.
The group called on the DSS leadership to ensure its personnel operate within the bounds of democratic principles.
The incident has sparked concerns among civil society organisations about the potential erosion of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
