Incident Details
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Delta Airlines Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, crashed at approximately 14:15 EST (19:15 GMT). Initial reports from the airline had indicated a later time, but this was subsequently corrected. The flight had taken off from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and was approaching Toronto’s main international hub when the crash occurred.

Images from the scene show the aircraft resting upside down on the tarmac, with emergency vehicles and fire trucks surrounding it. One of its wings appears to have been torn off in the impact.

Emergency Response & Passenger Safety
Peel Regional Paramedic Services confirmed that among the 15 injured, a child and two adults were critically hurt and transported to nearby hospitals. Ontario’s air ambulance service, Ornge, deployed three helicopters and two critical care land ambulances to the site. The critically injured patients were taken to St. Michael’s Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian expressed deep concern for those affected by the crash, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to supporting passengers, crew, and their families. “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident,” Bastian said in a statement.

Airport Disruptions
Following the crash, all flights in and out of Pearson International Airport were temporarily grounded. The airport had been dealing with operational challenges following a snowstorm that left 22 cm of snow over the weekend, causing significant delays. High winds and frigid temperatures further complicated air traffic operations throughout the day.

Passengers due to travel on affected flights reported being stuck at the airport, with some facing cancellations and long delays. James and Andrea Turner, whose Delta flight was canceled as a result of the incident, recounted their evacuation experience from the airport’s customs area. Despite their disrupted plans, they expressed relief that there were no reported fatalities.

Investigation Underway
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the crash to determine its cause. Transport Minister Anita Anand has acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured the public that updates will be provided as more details emerge.

As Toronto Pearson International Airport gradually resumes operations, officials continue to work on ensuring the safety of passengers while addressing the impact of the crash on flight schedules.
