Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV) has confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos governorship election, vowing not to abandon his ambition despite his 2023 defeat to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, GRV, who ran under the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, stated that he remains committed to leading Lagos but hinted that opposition parties must unite for any real chance at victory. However, he did not clarify whether he would remain with LP or seek another political platform.
“By God’s grace, yes,” he said when asked if he would contest in 2027. “If all parties do not come together, running will be a waste of time because there is a full state capture happening in this country now. We cannot afford for the opposition to be separate. For now, my job is to ensure that I have a strong party – Labour Party.”
‘Tinubu’s Reforms Only Benefit Elites’
Rhodes-Vivour also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, arguing that the removal of fuel subsidies, naira devaluation, and tax reforms have only enriched government officials and Tinubu’s allies while pushing Nigerians into deeper hardship.
“The people are experiencing unprecedented hardship. Today, over 70% of people’s income is spent on transportation and food. They’ve not even started thinking about accommodation,” he said.
He lamented that government extravagance contradicts the economic struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
“There is a culture of wastefulness and extravagance that does not reflect the dire economic situation that the same President is pushing out that needs to be reformed. The only people benefiting from these reforms are the bankers, people in government, and the President’s friends. How many Nigerians can say they are benefitting from any reform right now?”
As Nigeria grapples with soaring inflation—hitting 34.6% in November—Tinubu’s administration has projected a drop to 15% by 2025. However, GRV insists that current policies are widening inequality and making life unbearable for the masses.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, all eyes will be on GRV’s next political moves and whether the opposition can rally behind a unified front against the ruling APC in Lagos.
