The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare vacant the seats of three State House of Assembly members and one House of Representatives member who recently defected from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Maria Dogo, the PDP described the lawmakers’ defection as a “brazen betrayal” of the trust reposed in them by the electorate, insisting that they must vacate their seats immediately.
Citing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandate that elected legislators must forfeit their seats if they defect to another party without a division in their original party, the PDP urged the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly to act swiftly.
“While we acknowledge the constitutional rights of every Nigerian to freedom of association, we view these defections as unacceptable. We will invoke the provisions of the constitution to recover our mandates, as there is no division in our party at the national level.”
The party assured Kaduna residents, particularly constituents of the defecting lawmakers, that it would take all legal measures to reclaim the seats. Despite the defections, the PDP maintained that it remains the preferred choice of the majority in Kaduna State.
