According to Naija247news, the discovery was made during a raid conducted by NAFDAC officials, who acted on intelligence reports. During the operation, it was revealed that suspects had removed some cartons of expired drugs and relabelled them before security reinforcements arrived. Naija247news understands that this alarming practice poses a significant risk to unsuspecting consumers who may purchase these dangerous products.

From the warehouse located in Umumeje, Umuocheala, Osisioma Local Government Area, NAFDAC evacuated a staggering 140 tonnes of expired drugs. Naija247news reports that this figure excludes additional products seized from drug shops at the popular Ariaria International Market, a major commercial hub in the state. The agency also collected 178 drug samples during the operation, which will undergo thorough laboratory analysis to determine their safety and authenticity.

According to NAFDAC’s statement, the raid is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to rid the country of counterfeit and substandard drugs. Naija247news gathered that the operation highlights the challenges faced by regulatory bodies in combating the illegal distribution of expired and fake pharmaceuticals, particularly in densely populated markets and urban areas.

Naija247news understands that the discovery has sparked outrage among residents and health experts, who have called for stricter enforcement of regulations and harsher penalties for offenders. “This is a clear threat to public health. Expired drugs can cause severe harm or even death, and those responsible must be held accountable,” said Dr. Chika Okeke, a pharmacist who spoke to Naija247news.

The agency has assured the public that it will intensify its surveillance and enforcement activities to prevent such incidents in the future. Naija247news reports that NAFDAC has also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious pharmaceutical products to the nearest NAFDAC office.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of consumers and holding those responsible for this dangerous practice accountable.
