Lagos, Feb. 15, 2025 (NAN) – Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a stark ultimatum to armed groups in Bunia, a town in eastern Congo, warning of a military attack unless they surrender their weapons within 24 hours.

This threat follows the advance of M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, into eastern Congo, including the Bukavu suburbs, raising fears of broader instability across the region.
While Congo’s government has rejected direct talks with the M23, the United Nations has called for dialogue between all parties involved to avoid further violence.
Kainerugaba’s remarks have raised concerns over the involvement of Uganda in the conflict, as the situation in eastern Congo continues to deteriorate. The threat of military intervention in Bunia comes amidst a backdrop of escalating regional conflict and growing international calls for peace and security in the area.
The UN has stressed the need for negotiations to ensure stability, but the involvement of neighboring nations like Uganda and Rwanda complicates efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
