Lagos, Feb. 15, 2025 (NAN) – M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, have entered Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, after successfully capturing Kavumu Airport. This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, as residents in Bukavu report seeing the rebels move through the streets without facing resistance.

The UN has called for immediate dialogue between all parties to prevent further violence and stabilize the region.
President Félix Tshisekedi has sought international support to address the crisis, accusing former president Joseph Kabila of supporting the rebel movement. As the M23 rebels push forward, Ugandan military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has also threatened an attack on Bunia, another town in eastern Congo, unless all armed groups there surrender within 24 hours.
The situation has raised concerns of a broader regional conflict, as neighboring countries like Uganda and Rwanda become more involved. The UN and other international bodies have expressed alarm, urging all parties to de-escalate tensions and prioritize peaceful dialogue. The escalating violence continues to displace civilians and threatens the stability of the entire region.
