Nigeria’s Dangote oil refinery, the largest in Africa, is expected to reach full capacity within 30 days, according to its head, Edwin Devakumar.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Currently operating at 85%, the 650,000-barrel-per-day (bpd) facility in Lagos has been refining diesel, naphtha, and jet fuel since January last year and began processing petrol in September.
The refinery aims to compete with European refiners but has faced challenges securing adequate crude supply locally. Despite an agreement to purchase crude in naira, it had to import oil last year due to shortages. To address this, the refinery has requested 550,000 bpd from Nigerian oil producers for the first half of 2025.
The Nigerian oil regulator has warned that producers failing to meet local supply quotas may face export restrictions.
As part of its expansion strategy, the refinery is also exploring new markets. Aliko Dangote recently revealed that it has begun exporting jet fuel, with two shipments sent to Saudi Aramco. “We are looking at all the markets right now,” Devakumar stated.
