The Lekki Airport project is part of the state government’s broader vision to create a multi-modal transport system, integrating air, road, and water transportation to enhance connectivity and economic growth.
According to Naija247news, the Summa Group, renowned for its expertise in constructing world-class infrastructure, including airports, seaports, and highways, will oversee the design, financing, and construction of the airport. The project is expected to be completed in phases, with the first phase focusing on the construction of a runway, terminal building, and essential support facilities.
Naija247news understands that the Lagos State Government has earmarked over $1 billion for the project, with additional funding expected from private investors and international development partners. The airport, once operational, is projected to handle over 5 million passengers annually in its initial phase, with plans for expansion to accommodate up to 20 million passengers in the future.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who presided over the signing ceremony, described the project as a “game-changer” for Lagos and Nigeria at large. “This airport will not only decongest our existing aviation infrastructure but also open up new economic opportunities for residents and businesses in the Lekki Free Trade Zone and beyond,” he said.
Naija247news reports that the Lekki Airport will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including a cargo terminal to support the export of goods from the Lekki Free Trade Zone, a business park, and a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility. The project is also expected to create thousands of jobs during and after construction, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
As Naija247news gathered, the project has already garnered widespread support from stakeholders, including industry experts and residents, who believe it will transform the Lekki-Epe corridor into a thriving economic zone. However, concerns have been raised about the potential environmental impact of the project, with calls for the government to ensure sustainable practices are adhered to during construction.
With the signing of the MoU, Lagos State has taken a bold step toward realizing its vision of becoming a smart city. The Lekki Airport project, when completed, is expected to redefine air travel in Nigeria and solidify Lagos’s position as a leading destination for investment and tourism in Africa.
