Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Tems has canceled her scheduled concert in Kigali, citing Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group currently engaged in conflict in eastern DR Congo.
The singer, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, announced the decision on Thursday via a post on X, stating she was unaware of the ongoing crisis between Rwanda and DR Congo when she initially promoted the event.
“I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way,” she wrote, adding that her “heart goes out to those affected.”
Her decision comes as Rwanda faces increasing international scrutiny over its reported backing of M23 rebels, who recently took control of the strategic city of Goma. The UK government has hinted at a possible review of British aid to Rwanda due to its alleged involvement in the conflict.
The DR Congo government has long accused Rwanda of fueling instability in its mineral-rich east to exploit its resources. A July UN report supported these claims, stating that Rwanda has deployed thousands of troops in eastern DR Congo and effectively controls M23 operations. Rwanda, however, denies these accusations.
While Rwandan President Paul Kagame has not admitted to military involvement, he insists that peace will remain elusive unless the DR Congo disbands the FDLR, a militia formed by former Hutu leaders responsible for the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
