A State High Court in Enugu has issued an interim injunction restraining the apex Igbo socio-political group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, from considering former Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro as a candidate in the January 10, 2025, election for the position of President-General.
The ruling followed a motion filed by Chimenu Amadi, representing the Indigenous Igbos of Rivers State, arguing that Okiro, an indigene of Imo State, is ineligible for the position, which is reserved for Rivers State indigenes. The court upheld the argument, issuing an injunction barring Okiro’s candidacy pending further deliberation.
Additionally, the court authorized the Nze Ozichukwu-Chukwu committee to conduct the election and restrained certain Ohanaeze chieftains, including Chidi Ibe and Okechukwu Isiguzoro, from interfering with the process.
The motion, filed by Aloy Ejimakor, accused the respondents of attempting to create discord by forming a parallel body and violating the group’s constitution. According to Article 11 of Ohanaeze’s electoral guidelines, the presidency should rotate among Igbo states and the Igbo-speaking regions of Delta and Rivers.
The court emphasized maintaining the status quo until the motion for an interlocutory injunction is heard. Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s election will select a successor to the late Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, with Fidelis Ozichukwu currently presiding as interim leader.
