The United Kingdom has strongly condemned the occupation of Goma and other territories in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by the M23 rebels and Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF), calling it an “unacceptable breach of DRC’s sovereignty and the UN Charter.”
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In a statement on Thursday, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) warned that Rwanda’s actions pose a “fundamental risk to regional stability.” The UK reiterated its demand for the immediate withdrawal of RDF forces from Congolese territory, with Foreign Secretary David Cameron warning President Paul Kagame on January 26 that an attack on Goma would trigger a “robust international response.”
The UK also expressed deep concern over reports of M23 and RDF advancing through South Kivu toward Bukavu. The humanitarian situation has reached a “critical” state, with over 800,000 people at risk of losing vital food and nutritional aid.
The FCDO urged all parties to cease hostilities, ensure humanitarian access, and return to diplomatic negotiations, emphasizing African-led peace efforts. The UK is now reviewing its support to Rwanda and considering further actions in coordination with international partners.
