The Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA) has reaffirmed the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, declaring that the decision is legally binding and irreversible.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Obasa was ousted weeks ago over allegations of corruption and other offenses, but he has continued to insist that he remains the Speaker—even after Mojisola Meranda was elected to replace him. However, the Lagos Assembly, in a statement on Thursday, made it clear that his removal stands.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, has exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos,” the statement issued by Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly read.
It added that the decision to remove Obasa followed due process, with the required majority vote, as outlined by law.
“Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution,” the lawmakers stated.
Legislative Autonomy Upheld
Citing the 1999 Constitution and the Powers and Privileges Act, the lawmakers insisted that the State Assembly has full authority to regulate its own affairs without external interference.
“Sections 92 and 96 outline the process for the election and removal of the Speaker, and due process was followed in our decision,” they said.
The lawmakers emphasized that legislative autonomy was granted to state assemblies to ensure that elected representatives can conduct their business freely.
DSS Detention Drama Ends
In a related development, some lawmakers were detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) over issues linked to the Assembly crisis. This prompted their colleagues to storm the DSS office in Lagos on Thursday.
After the visit, the lawmakers confirmed that their detained colleagues had been released.
“All members of the Assembly earlier detained have now regained their freedom,” they said, commending the professionalism of the DSS Director in handling the matter.
Meranda Becomes First Female Speaker in Lagos Assembly History
With Obasa’s removal, Mojisola Meranda has been elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since its inception in 1979.
In addition, Mojeed Fatai was elected as Deputy Speaker as the Assembly moves forward from the crisis.
